Saturday Bank Holidays: Why the Fed Stays Open on Friday
When a holiday falls on a Saturday, the Federal Reserve Banks stay open on the Friday before. ACH, Fedwire and check clearing run as normal. Federal government offices close that Friday, and the stock market usually does too, so it looks like a bank holiday even though it isn't one. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the Fed closes on the following Monday like everyone else.
The rule comes straight from the Federal Reserve's own holiday schedule (K.8, Holidays Observed by the Federal Reserve System). Only the Board of Governors in Washington closes on those Fridays; the Reserve Banks that run the payment systems do not.
Every weekend holiday through 2033
The day that moves, and who is open on it. "Open" for the Federal Reserve means FedACH and Fedwire settle that day.
| Holiday | Falls on | Day affected | Federal Reserve | NYSE | Federal offices |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Independence Day 2026 | Saturday | Friday, July 3, 2026 | Open | Closed | Closed |
| Juneteenth 2027 | Saturday | Friday, June 18, 2027 | Open | Closed | Closed |
| Independence Day 2027 | Sunday | Monday, July 5, 2027 | Closed | Closed | Closed |
| Christmas Day 2027 | Saturday | Friday, December 24, 2027 | Open | Closed | Closed |
| New Year's Day 2028 | Saturday | Friday, December 31, 2027 | Open | Open | Closed |
| Veterans Day 2028 | Saturday | Friday, November 10, 2028 | Open | Open | Closed |
| Veterans Day 2029 | Sunday | Monday, November 12, 2029 | Closed | Open | Closed |
| Juneteenth 2032 | Saturday | Friday, June 18, 2032 | Open | Closed | Closed |
| Independence Day 2032 | Sunday | Monday, July 5, 2032 | Closed | Closed | Closed |
| Christmas Day 2032 | Saturday | Friday, December 24, 2032 | Open | Closed | Closed |
| New Year's Day 2033 | Saturday | Friday, December 31, 2032 | Open | Open | Closed |
| Juneteenth 2033 | Sunday | Monday, June 20, 2033 | Closed | Closed | Closed |
| Christmas Day 2033 | Sunday | Monday, December 26, 2033 | Closed | Closed | Closed |
Two quirks hide in the table. The stock market doesn't close on Friday when New Year's Day falls on a Saturday, so December 31 is a normal trading day. And Veterans Day isn't a stock market holiday at all.
Why so many calendars get it wrong
Most holiday lists start from the US federal holiday calendar, which follows the government's rule: a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday. That's correct for federal employees and wrong for payments. While building Bankday we found 37 payroll, banking and payments companies whose pages get it backwards, saying Saturday holidays are "observed the Friday before", or listing Friday, July 3, 2026 as a bank holiday.
The cost is real but quiet. Payroll gets submitted a day earlier than it needs to be, customers are told a transfer will arrive a day later than it will, and autopay or loan due dates shift for no reason. In 2027 it happens three times:June 18, December 24 and December 31 are all Fridays when the Fed is open and federal offices are closed.
Test your own calendar
Whatever you use today, these dates should come back as Federal Reserve business days:
- Friday, July 3, 2026 (Independence Day falls on Saturday)
- Friday, June 18, 2027 (Juneteenth falls on Saturday)
- Friday, December 24, 2027 (Christmas falls on Saturday)
- Friday, December 31, 2027 (New Year's Day 2028 falls on Saturday)
And Monday, July 5, 2027 should be closed, because Independence Day falls on a Sunday. With the Bankday API, each one is a single call:
curl "https://bankday.dev/v1/business-day?calendar=us-fed&date=2027-12-24" \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $BANKDAY_KEY"
The us-fed calendar follows the Fed's published schedule through 2040, and you can combine it with other rails, for example calendar=us-fed,eu-target2 for a payment that has to settle on both.
Prefer a static file? Every Fed closure from 2000 to 2040 is free on GitHub as JSON, CSV and iCalendar: fed-holidays.
