Why the address matters

How it works

The address goes to the US Census Bureau's geocoder, which returns the county and the incorporated city it sits in. Bankday checks every minimum wage law that covers that spot and returns the highest general rate, which is the one an employer must pay. Each rate links to the state, county or city notice it comes from, with the date we last checked it. For a list instead of a lookup, see the rates by state and city and the 2027 increases.

Questions

Is the lookup free?

Yes, up to 50 lookups a day without an account. To run the same lookup from your own software, get a free API key; address lookups are part of the Business plan.

Which addresses work?

US street addresses that the Census Bureau's geocoder can match. If an address isn't found, try the street address with the city and state, or browse the rates by state and city.

What is the tipped cash wage?

The lowest hourly wage an employer may pay a tipped employee in cash before tips, where the law allows a tip credit. When it equals the minimum wage, no tip credit is allowed there.

Why can two addresses in the same city get different answers?

Mailing city names don't follow city limits. Some county rates apply only in unincorporated areas, Cook County's applies only in towns that didn't opt out, and Oregon sets its rate by county and the Portland metro boundary. The lookup uses the Census county and incorporated city for the exact address.

How current is it?

Every rate is checked against its official notice, and the data is checked through 2026-10-27. Cities that adjust for inflation usually announce next year's amount in the fall; until they do, the lookup lists the change as not announced yet.

Rates come from the official sources linked on this page, checked on the dates shown. This is data, not legal advice: confirm with the official source before relying on it. Found a mistake? Email hello@bankday.dev.
