Bank holidays 2026
US banks follow the Federal Reserve's holiday schedule. In 2026 the Fed is closed on 10 weekdays: New Year's Day (Thursday, January 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday, January 19), Presidents Day (Monday, February 16), Memorial Day (Monday, May 25), Juneteenth (Friday, June 19), Labor Day (Monday, September 7), Columbus Day (Monday, October 12), Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11), Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26) and Christmas Day (Friday, December 25). The Friday that catches people out
Friday, July 3 (Independence Day is on Saturday): federal offices close, but the Federal Reserve is open, so banks process payments and direct deposits arrive as normal. The Fed never moves a Saturday holiday to Friday. A holiday that falls on a Sunday is a different story: the Fed closes the following Monday. More on the Saturday rule.
Bank holidays and federal holidays aren't the same list
The Federal Reserve closes on the federal holidays, with two differences that matter for money. It doesn't close on the Friday before a Saturday holiday, while federal offices do. And it has nothing to do with the stock market: the NYSE closes on Good Friday, when banks are open, and stays open on Columbus Day and Veterans Day, when banks are closed. See bank holidays vs stock market holidays.
How bank holidays move payments
A payment due on a bank holiday or weekend settles on the next business day. Payroll usually moves the other way, to the business day before, so nobody is paid late: the 2026 payroll calendars show every adjusted payday and the day payroll has to be submitted. For ACH cut-offs around each holiday, see the ACH holiday schedule 2026.

Canada and the UK
Canadian banks follow Payments Canada, which closes on Remembrance Day and Boxing Day but not on Family Day or Easter Monday: Payments Canada holidays 2026. UK banks follow the England and Wales bank holidays: UK bank holidays 2026 (Bacs).

FAQ
How many bank holidays are there in 2026?
US banks follow the Federal Reserve, which is closed on 10 weekdays in 2026: New Year's Day (Thursday, January 1), Martin Luther King Jr. Are banks open on Friday, July 3, 2026?
Yes. Independence Day falls on a Saturday, and the Federal Reserve doesn't move Saturday holidays to Friday, so banks are open and payments settle on Friday, July 3. Federal offices close that day, which is why many calendars get it wrong.
Are banks open on Good Friday 2026?
Yes. Good Friday (Friday, April 3) is not a Federal Reserve holiday, so banks are open and ACH settles. The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed.
Are banks closed on Columbus Day and Veterans Day 2026?
Yes. The Federal Reserve closes on both, so ACH and wires don't settle, but the stock market is open. They're the two most common bank holidays to be missed.
